Bio

At the age of 40 Stephen Ames is coming off the best season of his career. 2004 was a year that saw him win his first PGA Tour event; the Cialis Western Open. He also collected eleven top-ten finishes and finished eighth on the money list.

Although born in Trinidad, Ames has traveled all over the world to play golf, winning two European Tour events. Ames now plays the majority of his golf in the States and he recently obtained his Canadian citizenship and lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Golf has truly been a family sport in the Ames family. Stephen's grandmother was a national champion in Trinidad and Tobago and his brother Robert, who now serves as his caddie, has competed in several international competitions with Stephen.

There are no apparent weaknesses in this man's game. He is an excellent driver of the golf ball. As he is quick to point out he was the only player last year to finish in the top ten on the money list and also finish in the top 100 in driving accuracy. He hits the ball long and straight, he is a good iron player and has a deft touch around the greens. He has shown the ability to go low in several different events and has contented in more than a few big tournaments.

Perhaps the only question to ask about Ames is "Why doesn't he win more?"

Equipment

Nike made a smart move locking this guy up to an equipment deal. Ames plays the clubs, uses the ball, wears the hat and shoes, and is among the growing number of stars playing Nike Golf equipment. One thing you might notice with Ames is that he is always choking up on his clubs. Ames plays longer golf clubs for this very reason, he likes to choke up on the grip about ½" to 1.

Ames is a very good driver of the golf ball. He has the unique combination of distance and power off the tee. The driver he trusts is a Nike Ignite 410. Last year he played this model with a Graphite Design YS Power 65 shaft and 8.5 degrees of loft. He has more recently been seen using the new UST ProForce V2 prototype shaft in this head.

For a 3-wood Ames carries the Nike Ignite T-60 with 15-degrees of loft. His fairway wood has the Graphite Design YS-7 shaft.

Ames plays the Nike Forged Pro Combo irons. He uses them from 2-PW with True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts. The irons and all other clubs have Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord grips on them.

In addition to the PW, Ames carries two other wedges in his bag. Both are the Nike forged design in 53 and 60-degree lofts.

The only club in the bag that is not Nike is the putter. Ames uses a MacGregor Bobby Grace M1 putter.

Ames plays the red-hot Nike One Gold ball.
